About

“The Non-Profit Program” provides guidance on the professional discipline of non-profit program management. Articles typically fall into three categories:

  • Advice on managing programs at non-profits, primarily aligned with the principles taught by the Project Management Institute (PMI).

  • Career management guidance for project and program management professionals looking to sustain fulfilling, long-term careers in their industries.

  • Counsel for non-profit portfolio and executive leadership on how to support program management at their non-profit organizations.

Why Join?

Throughout my career in program management, I struggled to find training that addressed the specific challenges of managing programs at non-profit organizations. That’s unfortunate, because the work of tying projects together towards ambitious goals is both prevalent and extremely challenging.

Today, program management remains largely unrecognized as a distinct professional skill set and career field, often conflated with project management. The result is failed programs and murky career paths (i.e., it’s really hard to find the next job). In my professional experience around Boston, this is particularly true at non-profits; even the biggest, most established healthcare and academic centers struggle with supporting this career field.

With a stubborn streak and aptitude for analysis, I’ve figured a lot out about this murky career field. Join “The Non-Profit Program” community to learn more and gain unique support to help you succeed in non-profit program management.

Publication Details

“The Non-Profit Program” is published every two weeks on Thursday, with occasional breaks around the holidays. I’m a long-form writer with articles commonly running between 1,500 and 2,000 words in length (8-10 minutes read time). Topics will vary across the three core content buckets: non-profit program management, executive support, and career management. Series are common (I have a lot to say), so we’ll spend a lot of time together diving deep into specific topics.

Recognizing that project and program management training materials can be dry when presented in a vacuum, I bring in stories and examples from my own work experience, other mission-based businesses, and even pop culture where I can.

Audience input is welcomed and encouraged. Please let me know if you have ideas.

Bio

My name is Casey Holmes Fee, MS, PgMP, and I’m a program management expert with over 15 years of experience running projects and programs across non-profits, particularly in the healthcare and social impact sectors.

I grew up in a small town outside of Syracuse, New York, and spent most of my adult life in and around Boston, Massachusetts. A big fan of the classroom, I hold a bachelor’s in communications from Cornell University, a master’s in health policy and management from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and the Program Management Professional (PgMP) credential from the Project Management Institute (PMI).

Most of my career was dedicated to healthcare innovation, including eight years leading the Integrated Care Program at Boston Children’s Hospital (#1 Pediatric Children’s Hospital in the United States). Today, I’m starting a consulting company (launching October 2026), specializing in advancing non-profit program management, and the author of this Substack, “The Non-Profit Program.” Keeping my program management skills sharp, I serve as President of the Boston Chapter of the Alumnae-i Network for Harvard Women (ANHW), leading a program to advance women’s leadership and equity across Greater Boston.
